14.09.2021 – Confirmation Update

Dear parents and guardians,

You will be aware of the good news that the lockdown will be loosened when 70% of the population has received two COVID jabs. That is likely to occur in mid-October, so we are planning on November 6/7 for the Confirmations.

However, planning is made complicated by the fact that Churches may open provided we keep to 4sqm spacing, so each child may be accompanied by three adults only. Also, only the vaccinated may attend Church. Archbishop Fisher is working with infection and risk management experts to devise a proposal such that Churches can open up safely to all people, vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. Making distinctions between people along lines of health, especially when many are choosing not to vaccinate for good reasons, is hard to marry with general Christian principles.

However, it is quite possible that the Government will not grant the Church this exemption. So, to plan the Confirmation ceremonies we may need to know those children who will be accompanied by parents/guardians/sponsors who are fully vaccinated and those who will not be. We will not ask for proof of vaccination of the children. We will wait till the first week of term 4. If no exemption is granted by then, I will probably have to contact you.

May I emphasise that the sacramental team and I will work as hard as we can to ensure that all of our children who have prepared for the Sacrament will be confirmed? We might be able to have an outdoor ceremony for the children whose parents/guardians/sponsors are not all vaccinated.

I am sorry that I may need to intrude on your privacy in this way. I am sorry that we even have to contemplate making distinctions. However, the good news is that we can proceed with the Confirmations and we can begin going back to Mass again soon.

 God bless,

 Fr Danny
